Jungheinrich is building a new factory in China

Nov 27, 2011 Warehousing Ireland News 0

Jungheinrich produces industrial trucks for the Asian market in the Chinese Qingpu (District Shanghai). A new factory with considerably more production capacities will be built there during the coming months.

To keep up with the increasing demand for industrial trucks in Asia, Jungheinrich is greatly expanding its production capacities in China. The Ground Breaking Ceremony – the official turning of the first sod – for the new factory of Jungheinrich Lift Truck Manufacturing (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. in Qingpu (District Shanghai) took place at the beginning of November 2011. Apart from the Works Manager Reinhild Kühne, members of the Jungheinrich Executive Board, Hans-Georg Frey (Chairman) and Dr. Klaus-Dieter Rosenbach (Engineering), as well as local government representatives and members of the Qingpu Industrial Zone took part in the ceremony.

A production plant designed according to the latest criteria will come into being on a plot of land of over 60.000 square metres during the next few months. The site is approximately three kilometres away from the present factory and this will be moved completely to the new factory after completion. As well as optimised logistics, the new factory will also facilitate the production of more truck ranges.

According to Hans-Georg Frey, Chairman of the Board of Jungheinrich, the decision to build a new factory underlines the importance of the Chinese market and the entire region for the company. The Chinese market where Jungheinrich has been operating with an own sales company since 2004 has grown significantly over the past years. In 2010, China recorded a growth of approximately 70 percent to 200.000 industrial trucks (2009: approximately 120.000 units).

This growth also has a positive effect on the development of bordering markets. Approximately 300.000 industrial trucks were sold in the entire region during 2010. Only just 180.000 units were sold in 2005. Hans-Georg Frey: “Asia exceeded the European market volume for the first time in 2010 – with the growth locomotive China as the trailblazer. This alone shows how important this market is for us.“ The new factory will enable Jungheinrich to quadruple production capacities for the Asian market by 2015.

The concept for the new factory is among others based on ecological principles. Apart from utilising geothermal energy, the creation of a photo-voltaic system is also planned. “The created energy will in future charge the truck batteries at the factory”, explains the Factory Manager Reinhild Kühne. “The investment in a new factory is a great leap forward for Jungheinrich in China!“, said Kühne during her speech at the official turning of the first sod.

Jungheinrich has been running its own manufacturing plant in Qingpu (District Shanghai) since 2006. The production site, initially an assembly plant for pedestrian trucks, also produces electrically powered counterbalance trucks. Trucks are produced here for the entire region to the exact requirements of the Asian market.

Jungheinrich ranks among the world’s leading companies in the material handling equipment, warehousing and material flow engineering sectors. The company is an intralogistics service and solution provider with manufacturing operations, which offers its customers a comprehensive range of forklift trucks, shelving systems, services and advice. Jungheinrich shares are traded on all German stock exchanges.
