Greencell – a specialist supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables to the UK market – has upgraded the materials handling equipment at its Spalding distribution centre with a new fleet of counterbalanced forklifts and powered pallet trucks from Jungheinrich.
The distribution centre in Spalding – in the heart of the vegetable garden of England – is the facility from where Greencell’s Packhouse and Warehouse operations are managed and comprises both conventional and organic packhouses plus a 1000 pallet capacity chilled warehouse.
The trucks – six counterbalance machines from the Jungheinrich EFG 2 Series and three ERE 120 stand- on powered pallet trucks – are used to unload incoming containers and trailers and deliver stock to the chilled warehouses where they are stored at a constant temperature of between 1 to 5oC prior to picking, packing and onward delivery to supermarkets and other retail outlets.
One of the key drivers behind Greencell’s switch to Jungheinrich was the EFG 2 Series’ consistently low battery consumption. Thanks to their fourth generation AC technology, the counterbalanced trucks operate for two shifts without the need for a battery change at Greencell.
Furthermore, because all drive, lifting and steering motors use AC technology., there are fewer wearing parts which means the EFG trucks are exceptionally service-friendly with less downtime and lower running costs as a result. And, because all motors and electronics are enclosed and all the electronic connectors are sealed, the trucks suitable for both indoor and outdoor tasks.
Of course, operator comfort was an important consideration too. The EFG trucks feature power-assisted steering and a roomy operator compartment, while vibration within the operator compartment.is minimised thanks to the EFG’s ‘floating cab’ design.
The powered pallet trucks specified by Greencell meanwhile, feature powerful 3-phase AC drive motors for the highest performance. The trucks are also fitted with Jungheinrich’s patented Curve Control for increased safety when cornering.
