Six months after going live, the world’s largest photovoltaic system installed on a stadium roof is transforming SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, the home of German Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund, into one of the most visible symbols of renewable energy in global sport.

Spanning the roof of one of Europe’s most iconic football stadiums, the record-breaking[1] solar installation is on track to generate more than 4 GWh of renewable electricity per year – equivalent to the energy required to power the stadium floodlights for approximately 1,000 matchdays – while also avoiding around 1,700 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

Fully operational since December 2025, the new rooftop solar array replaced an earlier installation that could no longer keep pace with the club’s growing energy demands. The upgrade forms part of Borussia Dortmund’s broader sustainability strategy and its ambition to future-proof stadium operations with large-scale clean energy generation.

“For us, this project was about taking the next step on our sustainability journey,” says Florian Demnitz, Energy Manager at Borussia Dortmund. “We already had a solar system on the roof, but it was clear we could do much more. We needed significantly higher output and a system that would support the stadium’s energy needs for decades to come.”

Developed by Borussia Dortmund’s energy partner RWE, the rooftop solar array was designed not only to maximise renewable energy production, but also to preserve the instantly recognisable appearance of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. To achieve this important balance between performance and design, Borussia Dortmund and RWE selected JA (formerly JA Solar) as the solar technology partner for the project.

The installation comprises 11,132 JA JAM54D41/LB n-type bifacial modules, with outputs of up to 450 W per module. These modules are designed to deliver higher efficiency and lower long-term performance degradation compared to conventional modules, while their double-glass construction enhances durability, helping to ensure operational stability for the 30-year lifespan of the array. The bifacial design further increases energy yield by capturing sunlight on both the front and rear surfaces of the modules.

A full-black module design was chosen to ensure the installation integrates seamlessly into the stadium roofscape, preserving its visual identity while reflecting Borussia Dortmund’s black-and-yellow branding. The modules are manufactured under JA’s ITS Supply Chain Standard, ensuring full traceability and compliance with defined sustainability requirements.

To mark the collaboration between Borussia Dortmund and JA, Karl-Heinz Riedle, former German international and BVB legend, will visit JA’s stand at Intersolar (Hall A2, Stand 380) on Tuesday 23 June at around 15:30. Visitors will have the opportunity to take a photo with and get an autograph from one of the club’s most recognisable figures.
