Originally known for its range of 4-way forklifts, Irish manufacturer Combilift is exhibiting for the first time at the IAA with a recent addition to its range – the Combilift Straddle Carrier (SC). Developed as a more cost effective and flexible handling solution for containers and similarly oversized loads, the distinctive design of the SC will be an eye catcher on stand N 45 in the outside area.
This alternative to conventional counterbalance trucks, reach stackers and mobile cranes offers total independence for moving loads around the site for improved productivity. The patented 3-wheel model has two hydrostatically driven wheels, two wheel steer, a load capacity of 35t and is available with diesel or LPG power options. It is extremely manoeuvrable and stable even when operating on uneven terrain. As the frame and wheels of the SC are positioned either side of the load, aisle widths between stacked product can be reduced down to just 1m for much better use of available space.
A major advantage of the SC compared to other machines capable of lifting such large capacities is its much lower own weight and therefore greatly reduced ground pressure. A counterbalance truck capable of handling a 40t load will weigh at least 50t, putting extreme pressure on the ground surface, which will need special and costly reinforcement to cope. Even when fully loaded, the SC eliminates any risk of ground damage.
The Combi-SC is available in various designs according to individual specifications, for example for double stacking containers or customised to handle specialist loads.
