UPS has acquired logistics firm i-parcel to link its US and UK operations as it seeks to expand its cross-border e-commerce operations, a sector which a recent Pay-Pal study valued at £65bn.
Marks & Spencer’s has awarded Knapp a contract to design and install automated material handling systems at its national distribution centre in Bradford, which is due to go live in second quarter of 2016. The distribution centre will feature a high level of automation for goods-in, decanting, storage, picking and dispatch. According to Knapp, its OSR Shuttle technology will provide an automated storage and retrieval system featuring transport shuttles on every level serving workstations.
Import Services has been appointed by DP World London Gateway as operator and manager of a common user facility under construction at London Gateway Logistics Park. Development of the site, including a 386,000 sq ft warehouse, is underway and on track to open in the second quarter of 2015.
UTi Worldwide has opened a 30,000 sq ft combined freight forwarding and contract logistics facility in Southampton catering to air, sea and road. Located 30 minutes from Southampton Cruise Terminal, at Unit 2 Airways Distribution Park, Eastleigh, the facility specializes in freight forwarding for pharmaceutical, fashion, beauty and cruise line clients.
CHEP has launched a service that allows UK & Irish customers to make use of its semi-automatic stretch wrap machine on a cost-per-wrap basis. The new service, CHEP Stretch, provides customers with the machine, film, and equipment maintenance on a lease basis. Gill Sinclair, CHEP UK & Ireland, commercial director, said: “Our total cost of ownership calculator shows that for some customers we can halve their total load containment cost with the CHEP Stretch solution.”
Marks & Spencer has renewed its contract with Norbert Dentressangle for a further five years. The existing contract covers general merchandise regional distribution centres in Neasden, Thorncliffe (Sheffield), Stoke and Warrington. The new deal extends the scope of the relationship to M&S’s 1.1 million sq ft Bradford distribution centre, and includes the delivery of a major automation project at the site, along with the management of the existing ambient food operation at the site.
Prohire Plc, the fast growing Commercial Vehicle hire and Fleet Management specialists in the UK & Ireland, has announced its biggest ever contract win. Autobar Vending Services, Europe’s largest refreshment supplier, has appointed Prohire as its exclusive Fleet Management provider for the next four years covering Contract Hire, Daily Rentals and Accident Management.
Jaguar Land Rover has signed a contract with Gefco, following a review of its domestic carriers, for the latter to provide transport for the car manufacturer’s Range Rovers between UK production plants, storage compounds, and ports of exit. As a result of the deal between the two firms, Gefco is to invest in a fleet of new transporters tailored to the needs of Jaguar Land Rovers. The new fleet will improve operational efficiency, due to the increased number of vehicles that they can carry.
