On behalf of Herbert Kannegiesser GmbH – a global leader in laundry technology – DB Schenker will soon transport a cutting-edge laundry facility from Minden, Germany to the Russian Black Sea city of Sochi. The facility, valued at approximately ten million euros, will be used during the Winter Olympics in February 2014.
“As logistics experts, athletic mega-events are a welcome challenge for us. Our specialists start work long before the actual event takes place, making sure that everything is in place for the opening ceremony – down to every last washing machine,” explains Christian Schultze, Head of DB SCHENKERsportsevents, Schenker Deutschland AG.
For this project, the events specialists are cooperating closely with the rail logistics experts at DB SCHENKERrailog, the experts in rail logistics from TRANSA Spedition GmbH and OOO Railion Russija Services, both of which are subsidiaries of DB Schenker. Within a few weeks, the latter organized the precise rail transport of 42 40-foot high-cube containers to the construction site in Sochi. These containers, all carrying delicate technology, will be assembled at Minden train station and sent as a block train to the border of Poland and Belarus.
Once the containers clear the border, they will be transferred to broad-gauge cars in Brest, Belarus. In addition, several continuous batch washers and wash presses over 13 meters long will be transported to Brest by truck. They will be unloaded in Brest and consolidated into a special train with the containers.
A security force will accompany the special train to ensure there are no problems during transport. Belarusian Railways (BC) and Russian Railways (RZD) will also give high priority to the Kannegiesser train. RZD’s transport control center in Moscow will monitor the transport with the exact timetable and short transit times.
In Sochi, Kannegiesser’s project managers can count on multilingual specialists from DB SCHENKERsportsevents to answer all logistics questions related to this large-scale task. On request, the logistics experts will also provide professional storage for the laundry facility components until they are installed.
